How to Bake Big Daddy's Hot Water Cornbread:
- This is a great way to cook just a few pieces of cornbread without the hassle. The cornbread does not come out exactly as it would be fried, but is a slightly healthier and less messy option than frying the cornbread. We have had many customers tell us that they actually prefer this method of cooking Big Daddy's Hot Water Cornbread. Below is exactly what we did to get a result that was fairly close to frying the cornbread.
- Preheat your oven to 475 degrees.
- Spray/coat each piece with non-stick cooking spray or oil for easy flipping and to keep the cornbread from drying out.
- Set pieces flat side down on baking sheet at least 1 inch apart.
- Spray the top of each cornbread piece with non-stick cooking spray and let sit on baking sheet for 10-15 minutes.
- Bake at 475 degrees for 20-25 minutes, or until the bottom of the cornbread patty begins to turn golden brown.
- Flip each piece and bake for another 5-10 minutes to let the tops turn golden brown as well.
Common Questions/Issues:
- The cornbread begins to expand in the middle and the middle bursts out.
This happens when the grease is not kept hot enough throughout the frying process. Can also happen if the cornbread is moved before getting a crispy outer shell or that outer shell is broken from moving the cornbread around.
- The cornbread falls apart in the grease.
This happens for 2 main reasons: 1) The grease is not hot enough when frying begins. 2) The cornbread was not completely frozen before putting into the hot grease. If the grease is not hot enough to get the outer shell crispy quickly, the cornbread piece will fall apart. At the same time, if the cornbread is thawed at all, even very hot grease will not form the outer crispy shell to keep the cornbread piece together.
- Can I really bake the cornbread?
